Ashland is a city of fine homes, old and new, many in pleasant country-like suburban areas. It is the first Oregon city of prominence encountered when driving north on Interstate 5 from California.

It is an eminently livable community with great appeal, especially to those who enjoy the benefits of small-town hospitality and the proximity of world-renowned scenic splendor with unlimited outdoor recreation.

The Ashland elementary and high schools are excellent, as they are throughout Jackson County, with a strong academic and athletic heritage. Ashland is home to Southern Oregon State College; other nearby institutions of higher education include Rogue Community College in Grants Pass and Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls. Over two dozen private schools are in the Rogue River Valley region.

Just a short drive north on I-5 is Medford, the county seat. It too contains many fine shops, restaurants, service facilities, places of amusement and many cultural events. The Rogue Valley Mall and Medford Shopping Center are two of the most frequented places in the county.

Jackson County has traditionally prospered through its timber and agricultural resources. Today its economic base retains those two dominant factors, with the addition of tourism, computer technology, medical services, city and county government, and the retail trade. It is significant that the county, with its prominent cities of Medford and Ashland, is one of Oregon's four metropolitan areas.

Land has been made available for almost any type of industry, and transportation facilities include highway, rail and air. The Medford-Jackson County Airport is served regularly by major airlines and accommodates jet commuter planes and small planes alike. Industrial parks, a large pool of labor, ample housing facilities, a delightful climate and a diversity of recreation are exceptional attributes that give Jackson County the potential to be one of the west's major distribution centers. Leading products of the many manufacturing plants in the greater

Medford-Ashland area include bearings, cylinders, fruit packs,  grain crops, lumber, micro-film and related items, particle board, plywood, power and transformers.

The timber industry has been transformed into a highly sophisticated operation with the latest in mechanized production techniques and facilities. Agriculture is prominently represented by a multitude of fruit orchards.

Leading service employers include an electric company, telephone company, medical facilities, retail sales outlets and retirement housing.

Jackson Perkins roses are also shipped to gardeners and nurseries nationwide. Medford has memorialized its reputation as a rose-growing center with its Rose and Display Garden that presents a magnificent 43,000 sq ft display of blooms from May to October.
